How to prep for a boudoir session:

  • Hydrate, moisturize, and exfoliate! Drink lots of water, moisturize your skin daily, and exfoliate twice a week! Beyond just feeling great, these help your skin look extra luminous in pictures and actually helps makeup look more natural too.

Stretch! Boudoir posing involves a lot of stretching - a bit like a yoga class, my clients often find that their hips, legs, and especially their back muscles are a bit sore after their session. I encourage stretching in the days before your session and the morning of your photoshoot!

Be kind to your body: In the weeks before your session eat well, get plenty of sleep, do things that feel grounding/good to you.

When it comes to body hair: Do what you normally do! If you have a lot of body hair, that’s amazing — no need to change yourself for your session. If you’re someone who loves to shave or get a wax, go for it! That’s also amazing.

The morning of your session: Remember to eat breakfast! Take a deep breath - you got this :)

For more tips, check out this blog post all about how to prepare your mind and body for a boudoir session.

  • My biggest tip: try outfits on ahead of time and pack early so you don’t forget anything or feel rushed on your session day! Here’s what to bring:

Your outfits. Make sure you have all the pieces together, cut off any visible/distracting tags, steam out wrinkles, and hang everything in a garment bag so it’s ready to go. Feel free to bring extra outfits if you can’t pare it down - I’ll be able to help :)

Accessories (optional). If you’re planning to bring other outfit accessories like jewelry, jackets, shoes, hair pieces, a wedding veil, etc - remember to bring those as well. The majority of my clients are pretty minimal with accessories so if you don’t have anything in this category, that’s normal too.

Think about what you'll wear to the studio. I always recommend comfy, loose clothes that won’t leave imprints on your skin.

  • Don’t do any intensive skin treatments the week before your session. Cupping, tanning, facials - avoid anything that might irritate your skin in the week before your session.

Don’t try any brand new skin/hair/body treatments right before your session either! I’ve had clients who dyed their hair or tried waxing for the first time the day before their photoshoot, and then felt really self-conscious if it didn’t turn out how they expected. You’re gorgeous as you are! Right before your session, focus on celebrating yourself, not changing yourself :)

Don’t show up with brand new outfits that you’ve never tried on! Lingerie can be hard to fit, and I always encourage you to try things on at home (long before your session) so that you know you feel confident and like yourself.

  • To prep for hair/makeup styling: Arrive with a clean face and clean, dry hair. I also have makeup remover and facewash in my studio if you'd prefer to wear makeup here.

Gather inspiration photos: Collect 1-2 photos of yourself where you like how your hair/makeup looks (it could be a fancy vibe or an everyday look - just for reference of what you like to look like), and a photo or two of hair/makeup ideas for how you want to be styled for your session.

If you have any allergies or sensitivities to hair/makeup products please be sure to let the stylist know.

This might impact what you’ll wear to the studio. You may want to wear a top that will be easy to change out of after hair/makeup styling, like a flannel.

  • Choose a look that feels natural to you! Go for your everyday look, a totally natural no-makeup look, or your going-out fancy look. I always say don’t worry about trying new techniques — just do what you like and what feels like you!

Plan to arrive to your session ready to go. You’re welcome to bring extra hair or makeup supplies if you want the option to touch up during your session.

  • Consider how you'll change outfits. Some outdoor spots have an inside location/restroom where you can change outfits, others require more creativity or dressing in a car. One outdoor boudoir client I worked with brought an oversized dress that she wore while changing underneath; others have brought a blanket or sheet to change under in their cars. Consider your own comfort level and feel free to ask if you'd like to talk through ideas/logistics.

Consider what else you’ll want to bring to be comfortable during the photoshoot. It all can vary depending on our location and the time of year! Past clients have brought bug spray, sunscreen, slip-on sandals or sturdy hiking shoes to wear between locations, cozy layers or coats to warm up if it’ll be chilly, a towel to dry off if we'll be in/near water, a water bottle and snacks... I recommend bringing along a backpack with those items as well as your outfits!

What to wear for a boudoir session

How many outfits?

You’ll have time for 3 - 5 looks/outfits during your session. A look can be an outfit, a lingerie set, or an implied nude or fine-art nude look. If you can’t decide, you’re welcome to bring a bunch of wardrobe options to your session and I can help you choose what to wear!

Lingerie & Wardrobe Guide

I have a really detailed wardrobe guide that I’ve put together for my clients - it has all of my top lingerie (and non-lingerie) recommendations, ideas for things you might already have in your closet that work great for boudoir, my favorite bra/underwear styles, and answers to the most common outfit questions that I hear.

studio layering wardrobe

I have a small collection of layering pieces that are available for my clients to use at their session - lace robes, cozy cardigans, flowy white shirts, and fitted slips.

I keep these pieces freshly laundered in the studio, available in sizes XS through 4X or 6X (depending on the piece).

If you’d like to use these, just send me a note before your session and I’ll have them ready for you to try on!

Boudoir style quiz

I designed the Boudoir Style Quiz for a fun way to help you explore style options to see what resonates with you. You’ll come away with ideas, inspiration, and advice for your unique aesthetic (and you might even find that you’re a combination of a couple styles.)

Considering nude or topless portraits?

In boudoir photography, there’s a huge spectrum of how much skin a client can show (from clients who wear everyday clothing in their session, to folks who opt for a fine art nude look, with lots in between).

I wrote a blog post showing examples across this spectrum — read through it to explore what fine art nude or implied topless portraits look like, and to explore where on this spectrum feels right for you.

Info & Pricing guide

This is full of details about what to expect on your photoshoot day, and it has my complete price list with all of my ordering collection options and wall art.

Booking packages are on page 27, and upgrade options at your portrait reveal are on page 28-32.

explore the collections

Have you thought about what you’d like to do with you pictures after your boudoir session?

My clients are ordering their portraits in a collection with a storytelling album, or a stack of portraits in a box (plus the matching digital images). Many clients also add on some wall art or a folio! Explore the collections and art options here:

Planning to get a piece of wall art?

If you're considering a piece of wall art, then sometime before your session I suggest sending me a photo of any potential walls in your home where you might display it! Info on how to do that (and why) is right here:

When will I place my order?

You’ll choose a booking package when you book your session, and most clients end up upgrading their collection at their portrait reveal appointment.

We will plan your final order at your portrait reveal appointment when we are in person together! I do offer payment plans, so just ask if you’d like to learn more about that.

Did you know I have a…

Boudoir referral program

If you inspire your bestie to do their own session…

Many of my clients tell their friends about their boudoir experience, and often those friends end up being inspired to do a session of their own. I’m always SO deeply honored when my clients send their friends and family my way… and I have a referral program as my way to say thank you.

Here’s how it works: I’ll give your friend $500 off of their booking package for my signature boudoir sessions, if they book a session with me in the month after your photoshoot (their session can take place up to a year later).

And I’ll also give you a gift as well, as a thank-you for referring your friend: you’ll get a $500 credit that you can use for your next boudoir session, or ordering extra pictures/art from your photoshoot! A true win-win <3

explore what will happen on your photoshoot day!

Check out my “experience” page for a rundown on how your session day will go!

bring a friend to your session

Some clients want to bring a buddy to their session to help them feel more calm or as an extra layer of fun to the day. If that’s the case for you, you are absolutely welcome to bring one encouraging friend along to your boudoir session. Make sure to choose someone who will help you feel positive, safe, and celebrated - and platonic friends only please.

I also have some clients who find that having a friend along makes them feel more nervous during the photoshoot because they’re being watched while they pose. If you think you’d have a harder time focusing on yourself, then I encourage you to come solo and make the day just about you. This decision is up to you!

photo editing

In this blog post, I explain my approach to editing boudoir portraits (including what I will and won’t edit, my “golden rule” of photo editing, and how my editing philosophy comes from my own personal experiences of having pictures taken).

what to do in the afternoon

Here’s a blog post with some of my favorite suggestions for things to do in Minneapolis during the afternoon break!

common accommodations

Every person comes to their boudoir session with different needs, and my goal is always to meet them where they’re at.

This blog post has some examples of common physical and mental health accommodations that I offer clients in the studio. If you’d like to request one of these (or something else), you can reach out anytime.

I’m here for you, friend!

In the months/weeks/days leading up to your session, know that I’m always here as a resource for you. If you have any questions about how the day will go, need help researching a particular outfit idea, want guidance choosing between some wardrobe options… all of that is welcome! I’m here to help you in any way that I can, so feel free to call, text, or email anytime.

I can’t wait to spend your photoshoot day celebrating you and creating some amazing portraits together!!
