Cat's joyful, grounded boudoir portraits
This is the second time I’ve photographed Cat! The first time was two years, when they did a boudoir session as part of my In Their Own Skin series! It was so fun to have Cat back at the studio again - she brought such an intentional energy into these pictures. Some of their portraits feel super grounded and calm, and others feel so full of joy! I love that we were able to capture so much variety.
For this session, Cat used some of my studio wardrobe layering pieces! They really loved the fitted black slip that I have at the studio (I love how these slips feel simple yet striking, casual yet special) and she was also really drawn to my black lace robes which have a dramatic and feminine vibe! Cat opted to wear the lace robe layered over the slip for some pictures, did a few portraits with the slip on its own, and then ended her session with some fine art nude portraits.
What Cat had to say about their second photoshoot with me:
Cat is a powerful writer, and they wrote up a little reflection after her session and so I’d love to share some of their words here:
“I've had a shoot with Alyssa before - I was recommended by a friend to participate in her In Their Own Skin series, where boudoir photography complimented a personal interview.
I really like Alyssa and the environment she creates in the space. Everything is so intentional. She asks for a few songs you're into and creates a playlist for you around that.
She's of the few people who noted that my pronouns are she/they, and specifically made sure to be switching back and forth. That kind of dedication touches me in a deep way.
In this session, I can see my own internal progress. I allowed myself to be a lot more still. I didn't cover up my nervousness with giggles and smiles. I smiled and laughed when I genuinely felt that coming through. I was able to tap into a more grounded version of me.
Anyway I think my takeaway for all of you is that boudoir photography is a great way to meet yourself and your body in a really specific way. I haven't done anything else that has helped repair the broken bridge in the same way that this has. I highly recommend it, if it's something that's up your alley. As you can see, it doesn't have to be naked and spicy lingerie. It can be, there's nothing wrong with that! But… if there is some unsafe feeling emotions when it comes to your body, just know it doesn't have to be super physically exposing. The whole point of a boudoir session is to cultivate more self-love.”
Cat, thank you so much for sharing those kind words!! That seriously means so much to read - and I agree, your pictures from this session do feel so different from your first photoshoot! I love the presence, the energy, the focus and calmness and joy that you brought into the studio this time. I really loved catching up with you and working with you again!! Thank you so so much, my friend. Until next time! :)
