Beginning the new year with a self-loving boudoir story
Something I absolutely love about working with returning clients is seeing how their boudoir session visions expand from one to the next. When S and I first worked together back in 2020, of all my five primary approaches to boudoir photography, she felt most drawn to my classic boudoir look. Her portraits have a timeless quality and include a breadth of emotions - soft, romantic, and dramatic.
For her second boudoir session, which took place at my Minneapolis boudoir studio, S felt super excited about capturing artistic, creative, and playful portraits. S is a dancer and yoga practitioner, and she loved the idea of adding movement into her boudoir photoshoot. She also wanted to incorporate seasonal flowers into her session, so I found a medley of dahlias, marigolds, snap dragons, and zinnias from a local flower farmer that brought incredible warmth and texture into her session.
S’s boudoir session was filled with grounded, organic, creative energy. She brought a fringed sheer scarf with floral embroidery, and I photographed her stretching, swishing, and spinning through the studio. In addition to these more directed moments, I also turned up the music at times and invited her to dance and move around the studio candidly. Without feeling any pressure to look at the camera, these portraits of S feel full of life and story!
S also chose to use my studio bathtub for some portraits, with the colorful flower petals floating at the surface. These portraits have artful, whimsical, and romantic energy.
S was also a participant in the handwriting edition of my Dear Body series. She brought a handwritten love letter to her body to her boudoir session, which I incorporated into several portraits. The self-compassion that flows from these portraits is so powerful, and I hope you are as inspired by her words as I am!
